Drama News Oliver Twist. A naughty orphan which nobody can’t love. These words, resounding around the school hall, made a huge impact on the audience who listened, engaged, and dewy eyed for the whole show. Enjoying the sound of footsteps and voices fresh on the stage once again, as St Thomas puts on the first school play for a number of years. With its mix of media and shadows, as well as first class acting from the boys, the play really did represent the truth behind this ‘naughty boy,’ and the very sad tale of Oliver Twist, in its true light. The group unison work was very powerful, and created a certain atmosphere that can only be created by stage, lights, music, set, costume, audience, and of course the boys of St Thomas. This play represented all that is good about STAC, and the immense effort that these boys put into the play, really shows us what raw talent we have in our boys. Miss McMeekin
Hamlet. To be or not to be? That is the question we were asking of the group of Year 9 boys, hand picked by the drama department, to complete the Globe Theatre Challenge. The challenge was to perform two scenes from Shakespeare’s well trodden text, and to make it original, and different. Two scenes each, 500 school children, one play… They certainly answered that question with flying colours. The physicality and movements the boys created with their bodies, and their unison group work, was so powerful, the Globe, packed to the gunnels with people, were blown away. The representation of the funeral of Old Hamlet, which morphed into the wedding of Gertrude’s new husband, was so effective, clear, and controlled, the boys really showed Shakespeare in a very contemporary and dramatic light.
